Strategy for the development of recycled materials derived from post-consumer Tetra Pak packaging
Alier, 2023
Alier, a leading cardboard recycler, has launched a new initiative focused on the valorization of non-cellulosic waste derived from the recycling of Tetra Pak-style packaging. This fraction, known as "Polyal," consists of a mixture of polyethylene and aluminum; it presents significant challenges for conventional recycling due to its multilayer structure and the difficulty of separating its constituent materials.
Working with this complex waste stream, various types of Polyal-based materials have been developed by adjusting formulations and properties to meet specific technical and application requirements. These alternatives have been validated for integration into a wide range of industrial processes, ensuring both production compatibility and scalability.
The project also included a comprehensive characterization of the material from three perspectives—technical, environmental, and experiential—while also addressing surface finishes and perceived quality. Finally, market pathways were defined to guide commercial introduction, linking each material type to specific target applications, performance levels, and criteria for practical implementation in end products.
