Knife handles
Florentine Knives, 2021 - present

The Table Knife project brought together 28 design studios in Barcelona with the local brand Florentine Kitchen Knives, aiming to raise funds for the El Llindar Foundation through 56 unique knives. This collaboration was born during the pandemic as a way to foster community in the industry and was curated by the FKK team and designer Berta Julià Sala.

Considering Oiko's focus on researching and applying post-consumer recycled plastics, our knife handle had to align with this approach. Plastics are durable, resistant to moisture, and easy to clean, making them a sensible choice for a kitchen knife handle material. Functionally, in addition to recycling, it had to be recyclable, so the first decision was to make it detachable using Allen screws. This design choice allows it to be disassembled at the end of its lifespan, making it possible to have multiple interchangeable handles for different occasions, enhancing sustainability for the planet and providing practical and emotional value to users.

This marks the second collaboration with the Florentine Knives team, where we continued to explore the possibilities of recycled plastic for knife handle design. In this case, the handle was made from polyethylene bottle waste.

In terms of construction, we maintained the commitment to a reversible connection using Allen screws, enabling disassembly for recycling.
